Turning Water into STEAM: Where Inquiry meets Design Thinking (Poster 2)

We will demonstrate a successfully implemented project-based curriculum that combines all of the elements of STEAM with the study of water. Using design-thinking, students become problem solvers, create innovative 3D-designed solutions, reflect and share through a digital portfolio and use coding as a storytelling tool.

Learning Outcome #1
Participants will gain knowledge of rethinking traditional schedules and combining science, technology, engineering and art into a 2 hour STEAM block for in depth project-based learning units. In the first unit, our students actively explore water and why it is vital to our survival. They then research ways in which we can conserve water and make a difference in our water consumption by simple adjustments at home. After tracking home water consumption and identifying the least water efficient appliance, students develop an idea for a new design that could potentially improve the appliance.

Learning Outcome #2
Understand how our students use the design process to identify a problem, imagine possible solutions, sketch a design for a 3D printed prototype and iterate the design until it meets a set of criteria. The designs are 3D printed and pitched “shark tank” style with coding/storytelling components. Students use reflection throughout the entire process using SeeSaw, their digital portfolio program.

ISTE: Knowledge Constructor Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions.
