Integrated and Designated ELD Opportunities with NGSS (A Sample 3rd Grade Lesson)
Description
Explore how ELD standards can support NGSS by walking through a model 3rd grade lesson. This model lesson includes unpacking some ELD standards to guide opportunities for integrated and designated ELD. The lesson demonstrates how ELD standards can lead to meaningful scaffolds (i.e. sentence frames).

Learning Outcome #1
Participants will see how ELD standards play a role in supporting NGSS. The lesson designing process will be modeled to show how ELD standards are unpacked to support the language production needed for an NGSS performance expectation. The unpacked ELD standards also play a role in integrated ELD and designated ELD.

Learning Outcome #2
Participants will see student examples (videos and written work) from the model 3rd grade NGSS/ELD lesson. They will hear how the lesson was adjusted for students with disabilities and launched in an inclusive learning environment.

NGSS Standard: 3-PS2-3 Ask Questions to determine cause and effect relationship of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other. ELD Standards: PI.3.9 PI.3.5 PII.3.6

PIONEER: Help Students Ask Good Questions for Deep Learning
Description
Let’s explore good questions and effective search strategies through a variety of sources including Common Sense Media, Warren Berger’s work, and the Right Question Institute to deepen student engagement and understanding.

Learning Outcome #1
Participants will: Consider what makes a good question--and a "more beautiful" question--and explore different methods of formulating good questions. They will experience an abbreviated version of the Right Question Institute’s process for helping students get to good questions for research.

Learning Outcome #2
Participants will: Make the link between good questions and effective search terms and learn about and see a variety of online tools for evaluating search results.

Standards
ISTE Standards empowered learner and knowledge constructor are addressed in the thoughtful development of good questions and finding, considering, and developing good answers through brainstorming and online searching.
